What to do in Singapore

After five days in Singapore last year I have a few recommendations of where not to miss!

Sentosa Island

The best way as a tourist to get to Sentosa Island from the mainland is either via the cable car (around $30) or via the train on the Sentosa Island express ($4) from VivoCity. We actually ended up going twice and used both of these ways. I would highly recommend doing the cable car for the experience, but for $30, once was enough! Once you are at Sentosa there is so much to do!

Universal Studios was by far the highlight. We upgraded to a skip the line pass which still hurts when I think about how expensive it was, but it was completely worth it! Most queues for rides were between 1.5 hours to 3 hours and this meant we were waiting less than 10 minutes every time! It meant we didn’t waste the whole day in lines waiting and we had finished there after about 4 hours, leaving plenty of time to do other things! Based on whatever ticket we had, it included a pass to the SEA Aquarium. I wasn’t that overwhelmed by it, but it was free so eh. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there. The tobogganing was a big big hit though and you could see so many different ages participating. The queue was a bit long but so worth it for the fun (that wasn’t too over the top dare devilish…) And it was fun getting the cable ride back up again!

Hawkers Markets

Generally, we found it super expensive to eat out out and found ourselves returning to hawkers markets for an affordable tasty meal. The $5 tiger beers helped quench our thirst without the $25 per drink price tag at restaurants.. ouch..

Our regular was Makansutra Glutton’s Bay. It was always busy but with a great atmosphere. It was probably quite touristy, but hey thats what we are and we wanted chilli crab!

Gardens by the Bay: Cloud Forrest and Flower Dome

Cloud Forrest was fantastic and home to the worlds largest indoor waterfall. You would think with the Singapore heat that stepping into a massive glasshouse would be a horrific idea, but you are slapped with cool, glorious, refreshing mist, making it an comfortable exploring environment. Everything is beautiful, making for excellent photo opportunities. Highly recommend! The flower dome I felt was a bit of a dud. Unless you are particularly interested in plants, you can wiz around it pretty quickly! You may as well pop in while you’re there!

Trishaw Tour

We decided to book a tour through Viator which included a trip to China Town to explore all the markets, a traditional meal with the tour group, a trishaw ride and a bumboat ride though Clarke key and Marina bay. We were probably the youngest in the group by about 15 years but it was just awesome! Trishaws on main highways was both terrifying and hilarious! We were told so much history and finishing off the night on the bumboat ride was perfectly relaxing. For $80 I think it was excellent value for money!

Last few tips!

It’s always hot!

Be ready for rain.

Prepare for lots of walking.

It is so difficult to find somewhere for early (before 9 or 10am) breakfast, so opt for inclusive breakfast in your hotel or grab a few bits from the supermarket the day before.
